I had never heard of Smoky's Concession Stand in Lapel, Indiana but we got an enthusiastic recommendation from @sargeward83 saying he's tried two pizzas from Smoky's, the Dogfather and the Hartz and they were both unbelievable.
I love the funky name of this "concession stand" and had never been to Lapel before. It's a cute little strip, and a lot of fun in the summer I bet. We went in December during a pandemic so it wasn't as bustling at the time haha. The patio and string lights looked super cute and I definitely want to go back in the summer to show this gem off to our other suburban friends. It only took 10 minutes to get there from Noblesville!
This place overall was a complete joy, from the adorable patio to the modern gastro pub vibe and amazingly friendly serving staff. The entire side was a garage door, I’d love to come back and check out Smoky’s in the summer with it opened up, I bet the whole street comes alive.
Check out this cheesy bread with pepperoni, it was light and airy with a satisfying crunch and the hearty pepperonis on top were perky and the right amount of chewy. This is one of the best pizza companions we've had recently, and it was a highlight for me.
This is the Dogfather pizza that was recommended. It has pepperoni, sausage, onion, mushroom, and pepperoncini (those yellow hot pepper things that come in the Papa John’s box). I thought it was a good amount of heat without causing heartburn or a sense of regret. It’s a solid tavern style pizza but deceptively heavy for being a thin crust, I had to take some home in a box. I’d probably try something different next time, I’m not a huge hot pepper guy.
Chris got the loaded pepperoni and said it was a little sad that the loaded pepperoni wasn't more loaded. He also said the pepperoni was a little muted and not spicy enough. My pizza had plenty of kick so I don't know what he's talking about!
We will definitely be back, the patio is just too inviting. If you like tavern style (aka gourmet drunk food) or you're craving a combination of slightly burnt cheese and heat, this is the place for you.
