This unassuming spot serves up hearty, topping-loaded pies with a biscuit-like crust and nostalgic flavor that locals swear by.

Scampy's Annex Pizza, attached to Scampy's Pub in Anderson, Indiana, is one of those places that looks super unassuming from the outside but absolutely beloved by locals. One of our followers recommended it, saying "Scampy's is a legend. It looks horrible from the outside but the more toppings you get on your pizza you almost have trouble eating more than a few pieces." Thanks for the tip, Trent!

We went on a rainy Saturday in the early afternoon. We love going around 3pm to new places so it's not crowded - the only down side is that it's hard to gauge how busy it would normally be around dinner time. The interior has a sign that says Scampy's Pizza since 1974, and I'd bet anything that the place hasn't been updated much in that time (the light fixtures and wood paneling on the walls are a dead giveaway).

We started with pepperoni bread and I got a super cheap beer. These ain't no city prices! The pepperoni bread wasn't much to look at but it was decadent and delicious. It came in a humble plastic basket with foil. It was diced pepperoni rather than slices, the kind you used to get on pizza in elementary school.

Chris and I each got our own pizza for the main course. Chris got double pepperoni and I got the Chicken Bacon Ranch. The bacon crumbles were chewy in a good way and big enough to give you a little jolt of flavor. The ranch wasn't too overpowering just a nice white sauce with a hint of ranch. The generous amount of cheese was laid out over top of the ingredients holding everything in place.

The crust was in the category that I call biscuit crust, it is not all that greasy, it's rather thin and a little dry but with a pleasant biscuit taste to it. Similar I would say to the New Bethel Ordinary in terms of crust and cheese blanket over toppings.

Overall the pizza was darn good, but the atmosphere and the vibe made it feel like even more of an experience. If you're coming from downtown and want to visit this time capsule in Anderson, you'll quickly learn why this local favorite has solidified its place in the hearts of the surrounding area over the past 50 years.
