Sam’s Square Pie in Indianapolis

A happy consequence of our Indy Pizza Fest experience is that we left still hungry and ready to eat pizza in downtown Indianapolis. Sam's Square Pie had been on our pizza bucket list for a while, so it was truly a sign from above that we needed to get thick Detroit style pizza loaded with toppings with crispy edges.
We went at like 2:00pm so it was pretty quiet, and right after we walked in we saw 3 other groups with pizza fest wrist bands still on - obviously making the same decision we did after leaving the event. The interior is fun and eclectic, a seemingly contradictory mix of artsy and no-nonsense. There is a good amount of nonsense on the walls haha, but not at the expense of practical things like sturdy seating.
The owner made us feel immediately welcome, and did not badmouth the pizza fest that we all just came from, but did mention that he chose not to exhibit.
I started with a beer and garlic knots. Knots is not the word that comes to mind when you see these massive rolls absolutely drenched in garlic butter, parmesan, and chives.
We each got our own pizzas (naturally), Chris got the striped Loving Cup pizza with charred pepperoni cups, sausage, and lines of pesto and red sauce.
I got the Just Kissed My Baby pizza that is topped with red sauce, dollops of whipped jalapeño garlic ricotta, chopped fresh basil, a shaving of pecorino, and a drizzle of Mike's Hot Honey.
The owner went above and beyond and walked around giving out free samples of other kinds of pizza for us to try. You can tell this is a special place in Indianapolis with someone who cares deeply about their pizza craft and is truly trying to make the best Detroit style pizza imaginable.
I would love to see a head to head competition with Sam's Square Pie vs. Futuro for the best Detroit style in downtown. For me personally I feel like Sam's Square Pie has a slight edge but they are both jewels in the crown of the Indy pizza scene.
